Sutta NipātaThe Group of Discourses
One of the oldest collections of the Buddha’s teaching in verse: 1148 verses in five books, each shown with the Pali beside V. Fausbøll’s English translation of 1881.
Public domain. Fausbøll’s translation was published in 1881 as part of the Sacred Books of the East, volume 10; Fausbøll died in 1908. The Pali is the Mahāsaṅgīti edition published by SuttaCentral under CC0. Verse numbers on the English side are Fausbøll’s own; the Pali side shows the standard Pali Text Society number (PTS), which runs one ahead of Fausbøll in parts of the book because he translated one narrative verse of the Dhaniyasutta as prose.
Verses are paired one by one wherever both editions count the same verses in a sutta. In 3 suttas (Dhaniyasutta, Pūraḷāsa (sundarikabhāradvāja) sutta, Tissametteyyamāṇavapucchā) Fausbøll divides the verses differently, so those are shown as whole suttas side by side.
